After tracking these nightly for so long, we finally had a geomagnetic storm that was large enough to push the aurora far enough south into Wisconsin.
Here are some other shots I took, in higher resolution. It was my first time doing anything long-exposure, or at night.

:( I missed it. We're about half an hour north of Milwaukee. Where are you?

It had been about ten years since I have last seen them, but it is always worth the wait!

Beautiful pictures! Honestly can say this is the only time I've ever been jealous of someone from Wisconsin, your winters are terrible!

I was very fortunate to have seen them. I saw the storm was beginning, but didn't think it was going to keep increasing in intensity. After some time, I decided that I'd better check it out anyways so I knew for sure whether or not it was visible. I'm glad I did!

I couldn't have asked for better timing! The sky was clear and the temperatures were in the mid-20's or so, which allowed me to stay out quite a while.

Damn! Quite lucky sir. I've seen them once in DePere and once in Eagle River, but they were so feint I could never get a picture. Nice shot too!

I believe the last time I saw them I was driving back from Appleton to De Pere - I grew up there!

Is that picture an accurate representation of what you can see in person? I've heard that you need to take long exposures and that they are actually very dim and hard to see. Either way, i'm jealous. I'd love to see that.

Oh nice, I haven't been there in a decade at least. I used to fish the Fox River every February/March.

They were very bright and enjoyable to the naked eye, just a slightly dimmer shade of green. I could even see them without having to leave the north edge of town (although I did drive about 5 miles north to get away from most city lights).
To my eyes, the red color was not visible.
This photo, and the ones on Flickr, all have a 10 second exposure.

Awesome!!! This is one of the biggest things on my bucket list, seeing the aurora. I know the Mt. Washington observatory in NH posted some rad pictures from last night. Wonder if they'll ever make it down to Mass?
How do you track the storms?

I'm sure eventually you'll see them! I'd like to get much further north at some point to see them in all of their glory.
I mainly use these three sites for information:
www.SpaceWeather.com
http://www.softservenews.com/Aurora.htm
(they actually have a nice FB page for alerts)
http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ovation/

I've actually seen the Aurora in Minneapolis, but it was silvery-white, not these astounding colors.
Great shots!
